Energy Drinks (ED) are beverages that contain caffeine (in the range of 50 to 550 mg per can or bottle), taurine, l-carnitine, carbohydrates, glucuronolactone, vitamins, and herbal supplements such as ginseng and guarana [1]. They are generally known to stimulate cognitive functions and alertness [2]. With the exception of the caffeine, glucose and guarana extracts, there is an overwhelming lack of evidence to support claims that any of the other ingredients in ED contribute to improving cognitive functioning (an effect attributed especially to taurine) or physical performance [3].
